September, sees the start of Autumn and, although the days can still be warm or even hot, (after our Summer, let’s hope so!), the nights are beginning to draw in and are definitely cooler. Some Northern locations may see early frosts, so keep an eye on the weather forecasts and protect tender plants with fleece or, better still, move them into a greenhouse if you have one – if not now is a good time to start looking for one, we often have some bargain buys under our Garden Buildings Section – for instance, a walk in greenhouse for just £44.99!
Below are some of the more important jobs to do in your garden this month and some quick links to everything you’ll need to make them easier!
Remember, we deliver to your door so no added transport and fuel bills to worry about and no carrying heavy and cumbersome items from the garden centre!
September is the perfect time to turn your attention to your lawn and our Lawn Care Range has all you need to ensure a healthy lawn for next Spring, including fertilisers and conditioners such as Pro-Grow Peat Free Lawn Conditioner and EverGreen Lawn Soil. These products will help encourage strong roots, which is beneficial for the winter conditions ahead.
If you are planning to grow winter vegetables or just ensure that your soil is ready for Spring planting, September is the month to enrich and put back important nutrients into your soil – see our range of Garden Care Products for Organic and Peat Free Conditioners, Mulches and Composts. These not only do your garden good but also help the environment at the same time. And, always remember, that by using our free delivery service there’s no more carrying heavy bags of mulches and composts to and from your car!
September is also the time of year when we gardeners have to do some tidying up, cleaning Sheds, Greenhouses, Pots and Planters ready for next year’s seeds and plants. Also it’s time to trim hedges and bushes, cutting back over growth and making life easier for us when the leaves start falling next month.
For the men folk in the family the garden shed really does come into its own during the long winter months – it is the place to sit and contemplate the year ahead or to carry out those little jobs and repairs to garden tools that we’ve been meaning to do for months or to embark on projects for next year’s garden. But most importantly, it is the place to sit down quietly and listen to the football on a Saturday afternoon!
On the subject of tidying up, September is also the perfect time to clean patio paving slabs and decking, taking off any moss that has accumulated and helping to protect them from becoming slippery over the wetter times ahead.
The vegetable garden is still very productive in September, although many crops are coming to an end. There is however still time to sow more salad leaves and greens such as spinach, turnips and spring onions. Some early varieties of sprouts will soon be ready and make sure you protect cabbages from both pests and the cold. Clean the Greenhouse and enjoy the last of the tomatoes and peppers.
In general ……..September is the time to put a halt to any pruning and to bring houseplants back into the warmth – check carefully for any hitchhiking pests that may be hiding on them! Start cleaning up the flower-beds and remember to put down mulches and soil conditioners for weed suppression and to put some goodness back into the soil.
Garden events continue throughout the coming months so if there is nothing to do in yours go and see how someone else is getting on! Pick of September’s events is The Harrogate Autumn Flower Show, 12th – 14th September at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate.
